Take a Trip Back in Time to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions. Being hundreds of years old, the structures are world famous, and have drawn international recognition.

The trip up to Machu Picchu is often just as exciting as seeing the structures themselves. There are five main passageways that you make take to get to the mountainside, each varying in difficulty to attempt, and length of time taken to arrive at the final destination.

You must have a permit to trek the traditional Inca trail. It’s a four day hike, doing up and down steps built by the Incas long ago. The terrain is difficult to navigate without a guide. The Lares Valley Trail takes you on an adventure through the mountains, past a few Inca homes, and villages. Very few tourists travel on this path. You’re sure to see a few llamas along the way! The Salkantay trail brings you up close to the Saint Teresa hot springs. The trail is extra difficult as it cross through the mountains.

The jungle trek is the least expensive, and is designed for those who are interested in making their way up a rocky pass by mountain bike. There are also options to hike and cable car up, and you will stay in hostels along the way. And for those who are used to a more luxurious stay, you can always cheat your way up the mountain. This includes a trip through the surrounding tourist towns, staying overnight in a hotel, and trekking up the mountain for two hours to enjoy the sunrise and a day of activities at Machu Picchu. This is the most expensive option, but is helpful for those who do not have a lot of time to travel.

Once you have braved the ascent, be sure to tour through the ruins, sit and meditate, eat at one of the restaurants, and enjoy the spectacular view. Feel strong knowing that you are treading on grounds settled hundreds of years ago, by a cultural totally different from your own. Feel free to explore the area, take a hike to the nearby temples, or wander the beautiful paths along the mountainside.

Be aware that tours are only done in groups of 200 twice per day. This is done to preserve the trails, ensure safety, and minimize tourist garbage and other harmful impacts left behind on this majestic historical site. Book earlier, and be prepared for the time of your life!
